Description

Furosemide – is a strong diuretic (diuretic) from the group of loop diuretics. Diuretics work by increasing the volume of urine excreted. Loop diuretics work in a part of the kidney called the loop of Henle by inhibiting the transport of chloride and sodium ions. This increases the excretion of sodium and water. Increased sodium excretion, due to inhibition of the exchange of sodium and potassium ions in the kidneys, causes increased excretion of potassium ions. The excretion of hydrogen ions, bicarbonate, magnesium, calcium and phosphates also increases. However, the excretion of uric acid decreases (the drug may cause gout). Due to the reduction in the volume of extracellular fluids and their direct effect on blood vessels, these drugs lower blood pressure in people with hypertension. Furosemide is used in edema associated with circulatory failure, pulmonary edema, cerebral edema, acute or chronic renal failure, nephrotic syndrome, liver cirrhosis, hypertensive crisis, poisoning (forcing diuresis, e.g. in hypercalcemia) and in the combined treatment of hypertension. Loop diuretics may reduce glucose tolerance.
